ST. GEORGE'S DAY

This year the church, in its wisdom, has moved the religious feast of St.George to April 28 next week, but the Home Office reckons the national saint's day is today.

We recommend celebrating both days with generous libations of good English beer. This way you can be absolutely sure of the certain health, hair and skin, and personal financial benefits of toasting this legend.

And while doing so be sure to raise a glass to fellow beneficiaries of George, including the Muscovites, Lithuanians, Palestinians, Byzantines, and Ethiopians (not to mention the Germans).

You could also drink to our national scribe Shakespeare, who both celebrated his birthday and died on Saint George's day 1616, aged 52. Oxfordians can take it with a pinch of salt.

GUEST BEERS

CASK

Our delicious house beers - locals HPA, a polished real ale at 4%, and Butty Bach, a marvellous premium ale at 4.5% – both from Wye Valley Brewery, are joined by:

Twelve Apostles by Bristol Beer Factory - an Australian IPA, full of floral hop goodness, fresh and new to the list. Brewed to showcase a trio of Australian hops. Galaxy giving citrus & passion fruit, Ella bringing anise & floral aromas and Enigma redcurrant and melon. Rupert's password this week is "Eucatastrophic". A clean base of extra pale malts let the hop aromas jump out of the glass. 5.0%

Market Pale by Round Corner -  Pale golden from generous use of cara-gold malt which provides a pleasing caramel malt base. Citrus, pine, and gooseberry aromas from generous use of New Zealand hops also deliver a long bitter finish. 4.2%.

Citra by Oakham - Multi award-winning beer, light gold in colour, bursting with citrus and tropical hop flavours and sensationally refreshing from 100% Citra hops. 4.2%

L.O.S.T. - Live at the Old Street Tavern

An exciting Easter double bill last week featured the itchy-footed jazz of the Beatnik 4, and haunting Medieval folk noir from Daughter of the Water.

Beatnik 4

This week we look forward to hearing new material from Egret - the new incarnation of Vitamins for Rats, fronted by Aoife Higgins, and as the summer develops we'll have sets from Rev. Ferriday, Alvin and the Angry Barrels, Trovatori and the HumdrumExpress.
